Showcasing Oxford's unique West End

The West End of Oxford has played an important role in shaping the history of the city. The area is a stone's throw from the ancient west gate of Oxford (now the soon-to-be-opened Westgate shopping centre) and has been continuously inhabited since the late eleventh century.

The waterways in the area are a big reason as to why, not only the Oxford castle is situated here, but also why many Victorian industries including breweries and canal transport located here.

Many of the old and ancient buildings have outlived their original use. For example, the Oxford castle once used to defend the city from invaders - now caters to tourists through its hotel and castle tour. Some of these buildings have been turned in to restaurants which further highlight the area's unique character.

Whether you are visiting or are an Oxford local, take a moment to discover the West End's unique heritage and the restaurants that keep it in our collective living memory.
